Vermont-NEA donates more than $12,000 to striking Fairpoint workers

first_imgVermont Business Magazine The board of directors of the Vermont-NEA, the state’s largest union, has authorized a donation of $12,200 to the unions representing 2,000 Fairpoint Communications workers in northern New England who have been on strike for nearly two months. FairPoint has implemented a plan to realign benefit packages with non-union workers and to give itself the ability to hire non-union workers under certain conditions. The unions have agreed to some benefit concessions. Non-binding arbitration in November failed to resolve the issue or move it closer to a resolution. Political pressure also has been unsuccessful. The contract with unionized workers expired last summer.“What Fairpoint is doing to our brothers and sisters is unconscionable and unacceptable,” said Martha Allen, president of Vermont-NEA, which represents 12,000 public education workers in Vermont. “These working men and women have offered millions of dollars’ worth of concessions to Fairpoint only to be met with silence and a refusal to compromise.”RELATED: FairPoint strikers rally at Vermont State HouseVermont Public Service Department seeks investigation into FairPoint service qualityVermont-NEA’s board authorized the donation on behalf of the union’s members and locals, including the South Burlington Educators Association. “As all of us – particularly our recently-on-strike members in South Burlington – know, a strike is a last resort,” Allen said. “We implore Fairpoint to rejoin their loyal employees back at the negotiating table and stay there until a fair contract resolution is reached.”Allen was pleased to add Vermont-NEA to the list of unions donating to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers-Communications Workers of America Solidarity Fund. The FairPoint IBEW workers do not have a dedicated strike fund; the CWA does have a strike fund.“When workers strike for fair compensation, working conditions and benefits, it’s not just about them,” Allen said. “Our brothers and sisters walking the picket lines do so on behalf of all union members everywhere.” She pointed out  that the striking workers have been without pay or health insurance coverage for many weeks now.Vermont-NEA also noted that a special CWA Local 1400 wish list on amazon.com has been established, and Allen urged union members statewide to help the children of striking workers have presents under the tree this holiday season. The wish list has toys and other items costing less than $25.Source: Vermont-NEA. Vermont Business Magazine. 12.10.2014last_img read more

Bourbon Revenues Rise

first_imgFrench vessel owner and provider of marine and subsea services Bourbon has noted a rise in revenues for the third quarter of the year as expanded fleet and higher average day rates were offset by lower utilization rates.Bourbon generated $426.3 million (€340.8 million) over the three months to 30 September, up 5% compared to the $406.1 million (€324.6 million) in revenue booked during the third quarter of 2013.The company has recorded increased day rates in most segments and regions, owing in part to newer, higher day rates for larger vessels and also rate improvement on some contract renewals and extensions.Revenues from the subsea services for the quarter increased 5.2% versus the same period last year, owing to the removal of 3 smaller vessels (two transferred to Shallow water segment and one sold) and the delivery of 3 new, larger vessels. This accounts for both the increase in average daily rate and the increase in revenues. The reduced utilization rate resulted from a combination of lower level of activity and higher number of drydocks than in the 3,d quarter 2013.Christian Lefevre, Chief Executive Officer of BOURBON, commented: “In the short term, we are entering a period in which the market will be more complex, taking into account cost reductions by clients and the decrease in the price of oil per barrel”. In this context, BOURBON remains focused on excellence in client service execution and on continued cost control. However, structurally the supply and demand for oil & gas will require recovery in the level of investment in the future.” Subsea World News Stafflast_img read more

HMCTS shuts heavily criticised divorce centres

first_imgThe government is closing some of its regional divorce centres as a result of work shifting online, the Gazette has learned. HM Courts & Tribunals Service has closed centres in Stoke, Wrexham and Port Talbot, and will begin closing venues in Bradford and Nottingham. The regional centres opened in 2015 but have been heavily criticised by senior judges for delays and inefficiencies. A question mark over their future emerged last year, when family division president Sir Andrew McFarlane said the centres were being phased out and replaced by an online system based in the national Civil and Family Service Centre in Stoke-on-Trent. At the time a government spokesperson said no final decision had been made on the divorce centres. This week’s announcement, sent to family law ‘stakeholders’, confirmed their fate.HMCTS has been digitising the divorce application process as part of the government’s wider £1bn modernisation programme. Yesterday’s announcement states that 40% of new work is now issued online and processed in the service centre. From December the online service opened to lawyers.HMCTS says: ‘That shift has allowed us to start reducing our number of regional divorce units where the paper petitions have been issued and processed since 2015. Earlier this year we closed our venues in Stoke, Wrexham and Port Talbot. We have informed staff that we now intend to begin the process of closing our venues in Bradford and Nottingham with a view to having them closed over the next few weeks, starting with new applications.’Centres in Newport, Liverpool, Southampton and Bury St Edmunds will remain open. HMCTS says: ‘Later this year we anticipate that all new divorce petitions will be issued either directly online or via a digital by default process where petitions are lodged at a central point and then scanned onto our digital platform.’Once the ‘digital by default’ process has been rolled out, HMCTS says the work will be processed by the service centre, which will continue to deal with all calls relating to the divorce process in the first instance.HMCTS says: ‘Our four remaining regional divorce units will remain as we reduce the legacy work already in the system. As that work reduces we will consolidate the remaining paper work into the venue in Bury St Edmunds with the [service centre] dealing with all new cases. At that point any legacy work will be transitioned into the Bury St Edmunds venue which will be our longer-term legacy site dealing wih legacy work and the small amount of work that does not have a digital journey. This includes at this stage dealing with judicial separations, contested applications and nullity applications.’Financial remedy centres are currently being set up across the country. HMCTS encourages solicitors to make Form A contested applications to the centre where the action will be processed ‘and therefore delinked from the divorce process’.last_img read more
