InterUrban ArtHouse acquires Overland Park Post Office building across the street to provide space for expansion

first_imgRendering of the new gallery space planned for the InterUrban Arthouse. The InterUrban ArtHouse, a cultural anchor in downtown Overland Park for five years, has bought the post office building across the street to allow a major expansion of its arts programs and studio space.Angie Hejduk, chief operating officer for the ArtHouse, said the acquisition of the 10,000 square-foot post office building at 8010 Conser St. was completed with the help of a $160,000 grant from the City of Overland Park.Other funding for the purchase: Anonymous, $100,000; Regnier Foundation, $75,000; Howard Jacobson, $20,000; Hal Shapiro, $10,000, and Sunderland Foundation, $100,000.Plans call for the U.S. Post Office to downsize its current operation and continue to operate a 1,000 square-foot retail facility in the building.Rendering of the community porch planned for the new InterUrban Arthouse. The remainder will be converted to a dozen studios, classroom and exhibition space, and a coffee shop. The loading dock will become a “community porch.” The move also will allow InterUrban to meet the needs of people with disabilities.Hejduk estimated the cost of the renovation at about $500,000. A fundraising effort is underway. The InterUrban ArtHouse purchased the post office building debt-free and wants to complete the renovations without debt as well. The organization currently is in rented space across the street at 8001 Conser.Owning its own space and avoiding the uncertainty of rent increases was one of the goals when Nicole Emanuel founded the ArtHouse. “She came to Kansas City with her family and found that there were only a few artist spaces in this area,” Hejduk said. “She reached out to the community and over 100 artists showed up…by owning the building, we can control our rent.”Hejduk said the InterUrban ArtHouse has been a contributor to the renaissance currently occurring in downtown Overland Park. The retail district is thriving and developments totaling more than 500 apartments are in the pipeline.“We’ve been here for several years and feel we’ve been a key component of the cultural landscape,” she said. “That’s why people are developing and creating more living options.”Hejduk also praised the City of Overland Park for its help acquiring the post office building.“The city made a substantial endorsement of arts programming in this community,” she said. The ArtHouse will continue utilizing its former rented space at 8001 Conser. A new middle school for the arts is in the works there as well, and students at the school are expected to take classes at InterUrban ArtHouse. The first event planned for the new space will be a TEDxOverland Park grand opening on the theme of Systems. It will be March 2, 2017 at 2 p.m.The InterUrban ArtHouse has acquired the post office building at 8010 Conser St. in downtown Overland Park.last_img read more

Freightliner and Xstrata sign Australian coal contract

first_imgAUSTRALIA: Freightliner Australia announced a 10-year haulage agreement with Xstrata Coal on September 25. Trains will start in late 2010, carrying 10 million tonnes of coal a year between Hunter Valley mines and the port of Newcastle. In July Xstrata Coal signed a 10-year haulage deal with Pacific National which covers the majority of its current coal output, but Freightliner said the latest agreement will enable the miner ‘to effectively manage capacity growth while also managing associated risks.’ The alliance with Freightliner is to be known as X-Rail. Xstrata is procuring locomotives from United Group and wagons from Bradken, which will form three trains each comprising three locomotives and 90 wagons. The Australian subsidiary of UK-based Freightliner Group commenced rail operations in June, carrying cotton and agricultural products to Port Botany in Sydney.last_img read more

buffalu bills

first_imgCC97 SportsLogos.Net Members 1,386 posts I knew it… I prefer the “Standing Buffalo” to the “Motion Buffalo”. That red streak is blood after the buffalo has been wounded. This is bad fung shway or karma. Say no to the bloody buffalo!Look what happened when the Detroit Tigers changed their primary this year to the simple Old English D. The previous primary had a tiger in a cage. They uncaged the Tiger! While I’m not a huge fan of the standing Buffalo, it’s better than the logo where a buffalo is being shot in the head…. BUT the pants do kinda throw me. Are those the pants they wear regularly? They’re old pants from their previous uni set. I was gonna say, those pants actually looked decent. But you are correct, those pants are from the old uni set. I forgot how simple and good they looked in contrast to the mess they currently sport. This could be a thread for another time, but is it me, or do alot of NFL teams use their old/former pant sets for training camp? I know the Patriots used to wear their old “Pat Patriot”-era red pants in 1993 and 1994 training camps, then employed the “Elvis striped” pants from 1993 season during their 1995-1998 camps. Nowadays, though, the Pats use their current uni pant set. I dunno, I just got off on a tangent there for a sec. As posted by Chris Brown (bills reporter) on their site today:The Bills will wear their Throwbacks twice again this year…first at the Home Opener, and again at a date not yet known. For what it’s worth, I hope they switch full time next year. Share this post Link to post jerseyfan buffalu bills Piping Free another pic It’s not that the old Bills helmet is very interesting, but it has a cleaner look, and the jersey they use with it (the blue with white number) is MUCH better than what they have now. I can live with the standing Buffalo if it means they lose the dark blue unis. YMCA Old Fort Top Form, GCC Tigers capture 2019 Noble House Seafood hockey titles

first_imgThe thrilling men’s final was a fitting farewell to the 2019 Noble House Goals Galore Indoor Hockey Championships, as matches concluded on Sunday evening at the National Gymnasium.  The top ranked PEPSI Hikers with a zero-goal handicap would face YMCA OFHC Top Form with a 5-goal advantage.  The surprise of the match took place only three minutes after the start when entertaining Top Form midfielder Omar Hopkinson completed a skilful individual move to send his shot past Jason Hoyte in the Hikers goal.  The Hikers would now have six goals to overcome.  Top Form held firm for the next ten minutes but tournament top scorer Aroydy Banford would be difficult to keep scoreless as he proved in the 13thminute with a penalty corner missile to open the Hikers account.  With no further goals being scored in the twenty-minute first half and the score at 6-1 to Top Form, the Hikers had their work cut out for them. Captain Robert France with a nifty deflection and midfielder Jamarj Assanah launched the comeback with goals in the 25thand 29thminutes.  Newcomer Louis Adams however, playing with greater composure than expected at this level, completed a left side Top Form attack with a first time shot into the open goal immediately following Assanah’s goal to move the scores to 7 – 3.Mens Champs the YMCA OFHC Top Form With ten minutes remaining and needing four goals to tie the score, the Hikers replaced goalkeeper with an additional field player and piled pressure on the Top Form defence.  Branford scored a second penalty corner and a field goal in the following four minutes and the ploy seemed to be working superbly well for the Hikers.  Veteran defenders Aderemi Simon and Chris Low-Koan however held firm and foiled several Hikers attacks.  Captain France would bring the Hikers within one in the very final minute of play but despite their hurry, time would expire before any further progress could be made, leaving Top Form to celebrate the 7 – 6 victory. Paul D’Andrade of YMCA OFHC Top Form was adjudged the best goalkeeper of the men’s-division while  Branford of PEPSI Hikers, with a staggering 35 goals received the Most Goals award.  The women’s final though entertaining, was not as close a battle as that of the men.  With the unbeaten Spartans enjoying a 5-goal handicap to the GBTI GCC Tigers 3, the pressure would be on the Tigers to score against what had been a solid Spartans defence led by Captain Makeda Harding. The breakthrough would come just five minutes into play for the Tigers through the most unassuming of manners. Sandy Roopnarine, who had been having a quiet tournament so far, pounced on a loose ball in the scoring circle and evaded goalkeeper Jessica Mittelholzer with a shot past her right leg for the Tigers opener. Marzana Fiedtkou, who had put in an MVP performance throughout the tournament, scored next for the Tigers with a 7thminute penalty corner, which would be her first of three goals in the match.  With the Tigers already having made up the deficit by the 7thminute, the Spartans threw caution to the wind and pressed the Tigers defence from the restart.  While the Spartans effort created several chances, goalkeeper Natalie Hing was up to the challenge on each occasion and kept the Spartans scoreless.  Fiedtkou would be the next to impact the game with a 22ndminute goal off a counterattack.  Roopnarine, Shebiki Baptiste and Fiedtkou would each score once more to put the game well beyond the reach of the Spartans for a final score of 9-5. Jessica Mittelholzer of the Bingo Spartans was selected as the best goalkeeper of the tournament while Marzana Fiedtkou’s 20 goals gave her the Top Goalscorer Award for the ladies division.  Earlier in the evening in the two men’s semi-finals, the PEPSI Hikers had disposed of the YMCA OFHC Champs by 17 – 15 while YMCA OFHC Top Form gave the Hikers Generals their first loss of the competition by 13 – 10.  The GBTI GCC Tigers got the better of the GBTI GCC Spice by 5 – 3 while the Bingo Spartans dismissed Saints by 11 – 6.last_img read more
