UWF men’s cross country wraps up season at NCAA South Regional

(Phto by John Blackie)    HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Florida men’s cross country team finished fifth out of 12 teams at the 2012 NCAA DII South Regional Championships today. The Argonauts finished just 16 points shy of a trip to the NCAA Championships. Upperclassmen stepped up in a big way in the effort but the team fell short of their overall goal of a post season berth. Three UWF student-athletes set personal-best times today on the 10,000-meter course.UWF had three student-athletes earn All-South Region Honors including senior Martinique Sykes, senior Dominique Sykes and sophomore Cody Haden.“We are very proud of the way our team competed and the proud of the work that they have put in this season to have a chance to finish in the top three today,” head coach John Bergen said. “We came up just a little short today but these student-athletes have put our program back on the map.”Martinique Sykes saved his best 10,000-meter performance of his UWF career for today as the senior set a personal best time by 33 seconds. Sykes finished 10th overall (32:41.49) and crossed the finish line first for the Argonauts.Fellow senior Dominique Sykes had a solid performance today and finished 18th overall (33:00.88).“We were very pleased that our top five student-athletes finished under 34 minutes,” Bergen said. “That was the mark we needed beat today to have a chance to finish in the top three. Our region is very strong and a lot of teams ran really well today.”Haden crossed the finish line third for the Argos today and placed 22nd overall (33:04.84). The sophomore set a personal-best time on a 10,000-meter course today, bettering his previous time by 47 seconds.Freshman Sam Hippely had a spectacular 10,000-meter race as he finished fourth for UWF. Hippely shattered his previous 10,000-meter time by over 60 seconds en route to his 41st overall finish (33:48.24).
