Being named the starter for a powerhouse program is an honor, but the five-star recruit also felt terrible for his teammate.Dabo Swinney made the tough decision to go with Lawrence over an experienced quarterback that recently led the Tigers to the College Football Playoff a few weeks into the 2018 season.Instead of serving as the backup quarterback to Lawrence, Bryant decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal.Clemson’s team understood that Bryant had to do whatever is best for his career. However, it still hurt for members of the Tigers to watch him leave the program. In a recent feature article from Sports Illustrated, pastor Dan Lian revealed how Lawrence reacted to the news of Bryant transferring from Clemson.Lawrence was clearly heartbroken that Kelly had to transfer. He did beat out that player, Kelly Bryant, and he was crushed by it emotionally. Lian remembers receiving a phone call the night Bryant transferred. On the other line: Lawrence. “He was torn up about Kelly. It was wild,” Lian says. “He was broken for Kelly. ‘I feel so bad for him,’ he said. ‘Pray for him.’”This reaction is a testament to the culture built at Clemson. Not even a quarterback battle could affect the bond between Trevor Lawrence and Bryant.Although the two quarterbacks had to part ways, it appears that both are doing well for themselves. Lawrence is projected to be a candidate for the Heisman Trophy, meanwhile Bryant is coming off an impressive first individual performance as the signal-caller for Missouri, in the team’s surprising loss at Wyoming.[Sports Illustrated]last_img
