Rabat –American Presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, said on Monday she would not blame Islam for the Orlando shooting. The worst non-military mass shooting in American history has left Orlando, Florida and the nation reeling. Political figures released statements offering sympathy and prayers to the victims, although several statements become notably more political than empathetic.Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee for presidency, released a statement offering her sympathy to the victims of the attack, condemning the shooting as an act of terror and hate, and expressing support for gun regulation and the LGBT community. She urged actionable statesmanship over empty political expression. Donald Trump, the Republican presumptive nominee, issued his own statements on Twitter. Among offered sympathies, self-congratulation on “being right” about the attacks and Islam, and calls to get “tough”, he condemned Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Obama has long refused to use the words “radical Islamic terrorism,” and Trump urged him to resign because of this. He similarly said that “if Hillary Clinton, after this attack, still cannot say the two words ‘Radical Islam’ she should get out of this race for the presidency.”Clinton responded by telephone to NBC’s Today Show, saying, “In my perspective, it matters what we do, not what we say. To me, radical jihadism, radical Islamism, I think they mean the same thing. I’m happy to say either, but that’s not the point. I’m not going to demonize and demagogue and declare war on an entire religion. That’s just plain dangerous and it plays into ISIS’s hands.”Rather than focus on Islam, Clinton turned her attention to the gun lobby. She encouraged more gun control legislation to limit these massacres in the future. The Democratic frontrunner acknowledged that this legislation would not prevent all such incidents in the future, but advocated certain firearms restrictions as “common sense.”Clinton directly called for an assault weapons ban. She condemned them as “weapons of war” and wanted to reinstate a previously-existing ban that has expired. Hillary Clinton’s statements targeted the gun lobby rather than Islam.
