This past weekend was NYCC. One of the highlights for me every year is artist alley, a place filled with some of the greatest comics artists, pop painters, and animators around. For years artist alley had been in its own separate section of the Javits Center. This year that section had been torn down, and artist alley was moved to the opposite end of the venue by the panel rooms. I have feelings about this!Let’s start with something positive; it looks nicer there. The old section where they had artist alley basically looked like you stepped out of the Javits Center and into a warehouse. It was very drab and looked like you’d have to dodge a forklift at any moment. The new setup looks a lot more professional and an equal part of the convention. Also carpet. It’s nice they have carpet there. One of the downsides is that it was a smaller space. While they still keep the middle isle extra wide to accommodate lines and foot traffic it still got very full very fast. Part of that is because of yet another year of record turn out as attendance soared to excess 200,000 people, but artist alley was just too small. On the plus side, having fewer vendors in artist alley may have boosted the sales of some of the ones present as there were fewer options this year. The other downside that comes to mind is that it got uncomfortably warm in there. Much of the rest of the show was cooler; even the main floor. Because of the small space and being packed so tight it just got hot fast. The area must not have the best air circulation, and the air conditioning just wasn’t strong enough. If they have artist alley in the same location next year they definitely need to level up their A.C. game.To wrap up on a positive note, the artists and all their gorgeous work is really what artist alley is all about! Myself and everyone in attendance got to meet our idols as well as new friendly faces and left with new comics, prints, original artwork, and obsessions.
