Madang picked to stage world surfing event

first_imgThis world surfing event is expected to attract 300 people including athletes, tourists, officials and international media.The event is scheduled for the 2016-2017 season which starts in November 2016 and runs  to April 2017. Exact dates for the event are yet to be confirmed.WSL representative Steve Robertson is in the country to assess the TSC site at Ulingan Bay which is located about 180 kilometres north of Madang Town.The club is a two hour scenic drive from Madang Airport by sealed road along the north coast of Madang.Robertson is accompanied by Surfing Association PNG (SAPNG) patron and founder of TSC Justice Nicholas Kirriwom and SAPNG president Andrew Abel.The team travelled out today and will be there for four days to assess the logistics including security issues, accommodation and the surf site, meet the locals and discuss all the planning and event management.“It has been a nine year process to get this far since SAPNG staged its last national titles in 2011 at Tupira and we believe we are ready to invite the world here to PNG,” Abel said.Robertson says he is privileged to be in the country and thanked SAPNG for the invitation.“I have heard so much about how great the surf is and how beautiful the coastline is so I’m looking forward to visiting the area,” said Robertson.Justice Kirriwom said on behalf of TSC they’re honoured to have been chosen out of 11 other surfing clubs in the country and are looking forward to the event.last_img
